The Fat Thermostat: Liposuction Does Not Change Total Body Fat

We have known for some time that surgical fat removal does not impact on overall weight, and its important for us as plastic surgeons to educate our patients before they undergo this popular procedure.

Post operative diet control and exercise programmes must be part of the ongoing maintenance programme.

Visceral fat (the fat that surrounds the vital abdominal organs) gains are the main concern here, as they can impact on overall health.

I tend to refer to liposuction as ‘body contouring’ which removes any connotation of weight loss/weight control.

Patients need to be thoroughly briefed prior to undergoing this type of surgery. Liposuction is not a quick fix for weight loss….
