Fraxel® Skin Resurfacing

Introduction

Fraxel® is a pioneering, non invasive skin resurfacing treatment. It improves tone, texture and radiance of aging, sun damaged or scarred skin. - The skin feels tighter, more supple, looks brighter and healthier as the dead cells peel off and are replaced by fresh skin cells.

What?

Fraxel ® is a non-ablative laser that treats the skin surface in microscopic fractions. Tiny laser light columns penetrate deep into the skin, delivering heat in 1,000-2,000 microthermal zones per centimetre squared segments to the target area. - Fraxel® operates using two wavelengths 1550 nm and 1927nm targeting problem areas on superficial and deep levels. With the 1927 wavelength, you can lift away discoloration ( age spots, sun damage and pre-cancer spots), while the 1550 wavelength is designed to smooth texture (fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scarring). - Treatment is faster than traditional lasers, with less downtime.

Where?

Fraxel® is versatile. It is suitable for treating sun damaged skin on the face, neck, and decolletage as well as hands, elbows and abdomen. Many choose to have several different areas of skin treated in a single session to make the therapy more convenient. - Fraxel® targets wrinkles around the eyes and mouth, pigmentation like age spots, sun spots, melasma, actinic keratosis as well as scars, acne and stretch marks. - It is suitable for any skin tone but skin preparation with Obagi Nuderm ® may be necessary for 3-6 weeks beforehand.

When?

Fraxel® is suitable for any age group above 18 years of age. Autumn and winter seasons are convenient in the UK due to reduced sun exposure. - Yearly facial treatments help to refresh and recalibrate the skin after the summer season. - Skin should have minimal tan (wait 3 weeks after your holidays). - Active skin infections and acne are a contraindication.

How?

Please stop using any retinoids, peels, acids, or products that can cause skin sensitivity for a week before your treatment. Wear little make up on the day of your appointment. - To minimise discomfort a topical anaesthetic cream is used on the areas of skin to be targeted by Fraxel® and an integrated cold air device helps keep the skin cool and calm during and after the procedure. - The laser treatment itself is relatively quick—about 15 to 25 minutes—but you should factor in 30 minutes for the numbing cream to kick in before getting started. - Patented continuous motion tracking system delivers consistent treatment. - Honestly it doesn't feel great, but since you'll be numbed up beforehand you'll likely only feel a little stinging or feeling like your face is straight-up burning. - Immediately after treatment there may be a sensation similar to prolonged sun exposure but this usually settles within 24 hours. - The continuance and frequency of Fraxel® treatments depends on the condition of the skin and the results desired. For most three sessions are usually sufficient, scheduled four to six weeks apart .

Aftercare

You will experience redness and swelling in the first 48 hrs after the procedure, depending on the intensity of therapy. The skin will take on a more bronzed appearance, similar to the way skin changes from mild sunburn to a bronzed glow over 3-5 days and skin flaking and peeling can be expected. - As tempting as it is to pick at the flakes, resist the urge and allow your skin to heal on its own or you'll risk scarring. The chest usually takes a little bit longer to recover, so don't be alarmed if the process seems slow. - Wash your face twice a day during recovery with a gentle cleanser and a mild scrub. In the morning apply Vitamin C Serum and a light moisturizer . You may want to load up on a thick, emollient cream, but those can actually clog your vulnerable skin and cause milia. Avoid make up if you can. - Avoiding direct sun exposure is important when healing after Fraxel® treatment and so it is recommended to use suncream with an SPF of 30 or above as well as wearing a hat. Direct sun exposure within the first month of treatment may adversely affect results and could lead to undesired pigmentation changes. - Appropriate skin care regime helps to maintain the benefits of treatment and results can be long-lasting depending on the general condition of the skin and the ageing process.

Risks

Considerable research has shown time and again that Fraxel® is a safe and effective way to achieve a rejuvenated skin appearance. - Due to the thermal effects of the laser therapy there is always a risk of skin irritation, redness, and pigmentation but this depends largely on how aggressive treatment is . - The serious risk of skin burn or scaring is rare and usually superficial. - Antibiotics may sometimes be used to prevent infections. - Fraxel® treatment produces immediate results as the dead and damaged skin cells that can cause a dull and tired appearance are removed.
