Why do so few women enter the surgical arm of the medical profession?

Image Interesting article exploring why so few female medics enter surgical careers. I see much of my personal journey mirrored here…

Whilst we are seeing more women enter surgical faculties, there is no doubt that a large number are put off by the perceived difficulty in gaining a good work/life balance. Surgical training can take many years and even longer to build a reputation, especially in my chosen field – cosmetic plastic surgery.

Surgery is still very much a male dominated area in the UK and women need to be quite tough to succeed.  As this article suggests, maybe an increase in female surgical role models in the medical school environment would help.

It is possible for women to achieve their goals – pursue a career, marry and build a family, it might not easy but it can be done…
