Sharon Osbourne – a couple of rejuvenation steps too far? Angelica Kavouni discusses pros and cons of facial ‘filling’

Sharon Osbourne has become a household favourite with her compassionate, motherly approach to the X Factor contestants.

Open about having plastic surgery to maintain her youthful looks, Sharon has, up until now, looked quite fresh faced and ‘good for her age’.  In the latest show, which launched last weekend,  her appearance isn’t quite so natural.

With her stretched smile, waxy skin and frozen forehead, I’m afraid to say it looks like she has gone a step too far with non-surgical rejuvenation.

In the right hands, facial fillers, laser therapy and wrinkle relaxation treatments can turn back the clock, with the majority of women being happy to look a few years younger than their actual age.  When women choose to ‘stay permanently young’, problems can arise.

Too much filler can result in ‘pillow face’ syndrome, where natural facial contours are disguised and the face becomes a round ball with puffed cheeks.  I wonder if Sharon has had an additional facelift that has pulled her face laterally rather than vertically. This result is quite dated – modern facelift surgery such as the ‘short scar facelift’ avoids this stretched appearance.

The good news is that filler treatments are reversible – the result settles over a year, so hopefully as the series progresses Sharon’s look will settle, becoming more natural over the next few months.

There is a lesson to be learned for us all – practitioners and patients: that LESS IS MORE in facial rejuvenation…
