Bowel rupture is a documented complication of abdominal liposuction BUT, in experienced hands, is very rare. The peritoneum (sheath covering the internal organs and abdominal cavity) should not be compromised during the procedure and, if it is, this is due to overly rough technique.

Post operative abdominal pain after liposuction is something that should alert healthcare professionals to a potentially severe problem and the patient should be monitored closely.

The UK is set to put tighter controls in place, so hopefully over time the numbers of preventable deaths will dwindle to zero here.  It has taken our established, medically ‘advanced’ country years to consider putting safeguards in place, so I’m not sure how quickly governments of developing countries will react.
