Eyelid Surgery

During the ageing process, collagen losses leave skin unable to “bounce back” and, unfortunately, the skin on the eyelids is no exception.

“Eyes are the windows to the soul” and sadly the first and most noticeable part of the face to show signs of ageing.

Hooded upper eyelids can be hereditary, but drooping eyelids may affect us all after the age of 40, some more than others, as the extra skin fold can actually cause peripheral vision loss noticeable when driving for example.

Also fat pockets tend to slip southwards and the most noticeable area for fat to accumulate is under the eyes, a common problem that also is a major concern for many men in their forties.

Blepharoplasty is the medical name for surgical rejuvenation of the eyes. The eyelift procedure involves removal of excess skin from the upper or lower eyelids, smoothing the underlying muscle, tightening the underlying structures and removal or re-draping of any excess fat bulging through the protective membrane that covers the eye socket.

The incision is hidden in the natural fold of the eyelid either running parallel and as close to the eyelash line or a more hidden inside the lower eyelid (this is known as a transconjunctival blepharoplasty and is suitable for those without excess skin to remove).

During consultation Angelica will discuss the option of having the procedure under local, “twilight” or general anaesthetic. The local is a popular choice, as recovery on the day is much faster, without the risks associated with full anaesthetic. This is referred to as a “mini-eyelift”.

In my opinion, of all cosmetic surgery procedures, upper and / or lower eye bag removal makes the most difference to patients’ appearance and confidence.

I often combine upper eyelid surgery with under eye chemical peels, as they can really help alleviate under eye lines and rejuvenate the whole eye area

Expect to be out of action for 5-7 days, or until bruising settles enough for makeup to be applied. Apply antibiotic ointment, cold compress, avoid screens and rest as much as possible.

Initial bruising and swelling resolves in as little as one to two weeks, however, the final outcome of the surgery may not be seen for several weeks. Scar redness and itching are common as is dry eyes so have some artificial tears on stand by.
